Many of our patients complain of a ‘gummy smile’, where they expose too much of their top gum line when they smile. Some patients feel self-conscious about this and over exposed. There are a number of anatomical reasons why you may show more gum when you smile. For example, a short upper lip, a hyperactive upper lip, small teeth, enlarged gums or an overgrowth of the upper jaw. In the majority of cases, the condition behind a gummy smile is genetic so there’s nothing you can do to prevent it.
It is a very simple indication to treat by injecting a little Botulinum toxin to relax the upper lip so it doesn’t over retract when smiling. Many patients report the upper lip appearing more flat and full which is a nice anti-aging benefit to the treatment also. We can offer this treatment as part of a smile makeover treatment plan or a stand alone aesthetic treatment.
