Teeth Grinding

Teeth Grinding in Central London

Bruxism, or “teeth grinding”, is a condition that occurs as a result of an individual clenching their teeth, unconsciously, either at night or during the day.

You may not necessarily be aware that you grind your teeth as it is a common problem that often happens during sleep, while concentrating or under stress. However, if you find that you experience unexplained pain, stiffness or discomfort in your ear, head, jaw, or excessive wear on your teeth, it may be worth seeing your dentist. Consulting your dentist can prevent the pain from worsening, but also from developing further oral health problems.

Common symptoms also include increased tooth sensitivity and even broken teeth. The frequent grinding and clenching results in the enlargement of the masseter muscles (muscles you use to chew). The masseters sit over the jaw and can be felt when clenching the back teeth. Botulinum toxin or ‘Botox’ injections can be used to safely and effectively weaken the masseter muscle, reduce teeth grinding and jaw clenching, thereby improving associated symptoms. The injection of botulinum toxin into masseters, relaxes the muscles and reduces involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. This reduces the wear and tear on the teeth and temporomandibular joints without affecting the ability to smile, speak or chew.
